Playing traditional piece every day, improvising with the same person every day, and eating meals at the same time—these things feel like tuning into the same frequency.

And playing the gayageum feels like hearing the voice of someone familiar—that sensation of recognizing who it is the moment you hear it. The Fox and the Little Prince.

This one-person performance project, which began with the planning of a small performance segment within an exhibition, has now entered its third year, having started in 2019. This website serves as an archive documenting the process of change and expansion that has taken place over the years as the project has faced various challenges.
“Sky Squirrel Haven” began out of a concern for environmental issues, with the goal of raising awareness about the “sunset clause” for urban parks. I was curious about what kind of sensory experience it would be to lie down in a natural space in the heart of the city, gaze at the sky, and listen to gayageum music.
Furthermore, the discomfort I felt as a female performer of traditional arts helped shape the format of the performance. To break free from the image expected of a female gayageum player, I designed the setup so that the audience would lie down facing the sky rather than looking at me; and to escape the culture of performances dominated by acquaintances, I held the events outdoors in a guerrilla-style format.
Meeting so many fellow artists while working on this project was the most meaningful and important experience for me. I hope that the many artists currently facing difficult times due to COVID-19 will be able to continue their work, and I hope that “Sky Squirrel Haven” will also become a sustainable project.
전시 내 작은 꼭지의 공연 프로그램을 기획하면서 출발한 1인 공연 프로젝트는 2019년부터 지금까지 3년차에 접어들었습니다. 이 곳은 그 동안 여러가지 한계에 부딪히며 변화하고 확장해온 과정들을 아카이브한 사이트입니다.
‘하늘다람쥐 쉼터'는 환경문제에 대한 관심으로 도시공원일몰제를 알리기 위해 시작하게 되었습니다. 도심 속 자연 공간에서 하늘을 보고 누워 가야금 연주를 듣는 경험은 어떤 감각으로 다가올지 궁금했습니다.
그리고 전통예술을 하는 여성연주자로서 느꼈던 불편함들이 공연의 형식을 정하는 데에 도움이 되었습니다. 여성 가야금 연주자로서 요구되는 이미지에서 탈피하고자 관객이 저를 보지 않고 하늘을 보고 눕는 구도를 설정하게 되었고, 공연장의 지인관객 문화에서 벗어나고자 야외에서 게릴라 형식으로 진행하였습니다.
이 프로젝트를 하면서 많은 동료 작업자들을 만나게 된 것이 저에게는 가장 고맙고 중요한 일이었습니다. 코로나19로 인해 힘든 시간을 보내고 있을 많은 예술가들이 작업을 지속할 수 있기를 바라며, 하늘다람쥐 쉼터도 지속가능한 프로젝트가 되기를 바래봅니다.
