Pungmul Chabi 風物差備

[Pungmul Chabi 風物差備]
The Gayageum is a Korean zither string instrument. When exposed to the breeze from an electric fan, its strings resonate and produce sound. Though calm and composed on the outside, the many sounds emerging from within evoke the inner lives of women in the past.
“Pungmul” (風物) historically referred to musical instruments, while today it is commonly associated with nongak and its instrumental traditions. “Pungmul Chabi” (風物差備) refers to women musicians who performed instrumental music at royal court banquets in the late Joseon period, particularly at inner court banquets where male court musicians could not participate.
Among traditional Korean vocal genres—such as gagok, gasa, and sijo—which are performed while seated, performers are expected to sit demurely and remain motionless. To me, this is reminiscent of an automatic musical instrument. I view the “Pungmul Chabi” I created as something akin to an automatic musical instrument.
